Women of the low class wore neutral and pastel shades, as the upper classes wore deep, bright shades. In Babylonia, 3200 B.C., men, not women, decorated their toenails with green and black kohl, an ancient plastic. It was made from beeswax, egg whites, gelatin, veg dyes, and gum arabic. Chinese dipped their toenails in this mixture for several hours or left it to dried up. Colors ranged from green to red, with regards to the combination of the ingredients. Through the Zhou Dynasty, 600 B.C., royalty used this simple toe nail polish with gold and silver dust on their nails to show their social position.
