In Babylonia, 3200 B.C., men, not women, decorated their nails with green and black kohl, an ancient cosmetic. To prepare for conflict, warriors of Babylon spent time having their toenails prepared, scalp curled and experienced other similar beauty treatments. As in ancient Egypt, nail color indicated one's status, black for noblemen and green for the normal man. Around the same time, 3000 B.C., the first nail polish started in ancient China. It was made from beeswax, egg whites, gelatin, veg dyes, and gum arabic. Chinese language dipped their toenails in this mix for several hours or kept it on to dry out. Colors ranged from red to red, depending on the combination of the ingredients. During the Zhou Dynasty, 600 B.C., royalty used this simple toenail polish with gold and silver dust on their nails showing their social position.
