In ancient Egypt, from 5000 B.C. to 3000 B.C., women would dye their claws with henna to indicate communal seductiveness and position. Women of the lower class wore pastel and neutral shades, as the upper classes wore deep, bright shades. In Babylonia, 3200 B.C., men, not women, decorated their toenails with dark and renewable kohl, an ancient beauty. To get ready for war, warriors of Babylon put in hours having their fingernails or toenails prepared, wild hair curled and possessed other similar beauty treatments. As in ancient Egypt, nail color indicated one's status, black for noblemen and green for the common man. Around once, 3000 B.C., the first toenail polish originated in ancient China. It was made from beeswax, egg whites, gelatin, veg dyes, and gum arabic. Chinese language dipped their fingernails or toenails in this concoction for several hours or kept it to dried up. Colors ranged from green to red, depending on the mixture of the ingredients. Through the Zhou Dynasty, 600 B.C., royalty used this simple toenail polish with gold and silver dust on their nails to show their social status.
